FINGERS CROSS-ED: THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE AFTER AMERICAN LEGION

 Jordan Lorence

As the fight over religious liberty rages on, find out which cause is prevailing after the Supreme Court’s recent holding in American Legion v. American Humanist Association, popularly known as the “Bladensburg Cross case,” concerning the Establishment Clause.  Jordan Lorence from Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a widely-respected expert on First Amendment matters, will discuss how the case came about, how it was argued and what its holding means for the future.  Sam Sedeghi, a member of our chapter board, will provide supplemental commentary about a Third Circuit case, Freedom From Religion Foundation v. County of Lehigh, whose holding was shaped by the American Legion result.

Jordan is currently senior counsel and director of strategic engagement with ADF, where he plays a key role with the Strategic Relations and Training Team.  He has argued cases in courts across the country, including the Supreme Court, and has made media appearances on television, radio and in print in numerous national outlets.  He earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and received a B.A. in journalism from Stanford University.
