Religious Liberties for Religious Minorities in America

MCLE Elimination of Bias Credit

Asma Uddin

Join us when our guest speaker, Ms. Asma Uddin, will address the issue of religious liberties for religious minorities.  Specifically, she will be discussing recent Supreme Court cases such as Holt v. Hobbs, in which the Supreme Court unanimously held that a prison policy that prevented a Muslim prisoner from growing a half-inch beard in accordance with his religious beliefs was unconstitutional, and EEOC v. Abercrombie, which dealt with the standard to prevail in a claim of disparate treatment for religious accommodation. She will also discuss recent cases involving accommodations for religious minorities serving in the U.S. military and at military universities.

Asma Uddin is Director of Strategy at the Center for Islam and Religious Freedom. Prior to joining CIRF, she was Counsel at the The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, where she worked on both international and American religious liberty advocacy, including numerous high-profile cases litigated before the U.S. Supreme Court.  Ms. Uddin worked as a litigator at Morgan Lewis Bockius prior to her work at The Becket Fund.   Ms. Uddin holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and J.D. from the University of Chicago, where she served on Law Review.

She has served as an expert panelist for the Washington Post/Newsweek blog "On Faith," and as a contributor to Huffington Post Religion, CNN's Belief Blog, and Common Ground News. Her more scholarly work has been published in the Rutgers Journal of Law and Religion, Review of Faith & International Affairs, and the St. Thomas University Law Journal.
