The Iran Nuclear Deal: How Did We Arrive Here and What Can Be Done Next?


Our Speaker:  Jamil N. Jaffer, Adjunct Professor of Law and 
Director, Homeland and National Security Law Program,
George Mason University School of Law

Professor Jaffer most recently served as Chief Counsel and Senior Advisor to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), where he was the lead drafter of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA) and two enacted laws imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, as well as legislation authorizing the use of military force against Syria, ISIS, and al-Qaeda in the global war on terror. Professor Jaffer previously served at the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) where he was the lead drafter of the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) and led committee efforts on terrorism and key intelligence collection programs, including the Section 215 (metadata) and 702 (content) programs, among other things. Professor Jaffer also served in the Bush Administration as an Associate Counsel to the President and as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General in the National Security Division at the Department of Justice, where among other things, he worked on the first matter to be litigated in the FISA Court. Professor Jaffer is also currently a Vice President for Strategy and Business Development at IronNet Cybersecurity, a startup technology company founded by the former heads of the National Security Agency and the National Counterterrorism Center. 

Professor Jaffer has appeared in many media venues, including the Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report, National Review Online, MSNBC Digital and National Public Radio. He is the author and co-author of a number of published works, including a recent book chapter on international terrorism with former CIA Director Gen. Mike Hayden in CHOOSING TO LEAD: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY FOR A DISORDERED WORLD (2015) and a book chapter on surveillance laws in the ABA’s LAW OF COUNTERTERRORISM (2011). 

Professor Jaffer holds degrees from UCLA (B.A. cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, 1998), the University of Chicago Law School (J.D. with honors, 2003), and the United States Naval War College (M.A. with distinction, 2006).
